The Code of Ethics
CODE OF ETHICS

The Kennel Club of Jersey is committed to
the welfare of all dogs
As such its Membership has agreed to adopt this Code of Ethics
and would encourage all Jersey dog owners to do the same
As a responsible dog owner I will . . .
- abide by all aspects of the Animal Welfare (Jersey) Law 2004 with regard to dog ownership.
- properly house, feed, water & exercise all dogs under my care and arrange for appropriate veterinary attention if & when required.
- ensure that my dogs wear properly tagged collars & will be kept leashed or under effective control when away from home.
- clean up after my dogs in public places or anywhere my dogs are being exercised.
- not allow any of my dogs to roam at large or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or those carrying out official duties.
- register dogs with the Parish.
- transport my dogs securely.
- never use or endorse the use of electric collars
In addition, when wishing to breed a litter of puppies, pedigree or not, I agree to the following:
- mating will not take place between mother/son, father/daughter or brother/sister
- bitches will not be bred from until one year old, nor should they be bred from after eight years of age.
- undertake to test all breeding stock, where possible, especially for hereditary conditions relevant to their breed, and not breed using animals likely to continue such conditions.
- not to breed from a dog or bitch which could be in any way harmful to the dog or to the breed.
- not create demand for, nor supply, puppies that have been docked illegally.
- that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes.
When selling or re-homing puppies I also agree to . . .
- only sell dogs where there is an expectation of a happy & healthy life & will help with re-homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.
- supply written details of all dietary requirements & give guidance concerning responsible dog ownership when placing dogs in a new home.
- not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of their breed nor falsely advertise dogs nor mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.
- not rehome puppies before 8 weeks old except in exceptional circumstances
- have them vet checked before leaving my care
- ensure that all relevant Kennel Club of Jersey documents are made available to the new owner when selling or transferring a dog, and agree, in writing, to forward any relevant documents at the earliest opportunity, if not immediately available, unless another arrangement has been mutually agreed in writing.
- not sell any dog to commercial wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind.
Any Member of the Kennel Club of Jersey found to be in wilful breach of these provisions will receive disciplinary action by the Club and/or be reported to the relevant authorities for legal action, as appropriate.
